CASE STUDY - HASTELLOY ALLOY REACTORS

Two reactors used in Victoria, Australia for the manufacture of herbicides were subjected to extremely corrosive conditions in the course of handling agitated slurries containing mineral acids and chlorides at 230°F (110°C). Failure due to stress cracking, usually in the weld area and severe pitting in the lower half of the vessels, occurred in less than five years.

On the basis of test results, Akras Industries fabricated and installed two new reactors made of Hastelloy alloy C-22. The alloy vessels and mixers now have an expected life of 15 years, and the steam coil should not need to be replaced for at least five years, making Akras's solution much more cost effective than previous reactors.

These Reactors are still used on a daily basis some 35+ years later.
